Practical build details for swales, culverts, and temporary erosion controls

Instead of one big trench, use multiple small contour swales and berms placed strictly on the contour to capture sheet flow and encourage infiltration. On very steep grades, place horizontal infiltration lines several feet apart rather than deep, isolated excavations to reduce slumping risk.

- Keep a simple log with dates, storm amounts, and actions so you have a record for maintenance and permits.
Do two homeowner checks to screen for undersized features. First, remember that 1,000 square feet of roof makes roughly 600 gallons per inch of rain.
Second, size swales or rain gardens at about 20 to 30 percent of their contributing area for routine rain capture. For driveway culverts, 18 to 24 inches is a common residential range, but go larger if slopes or catchments are big.
Plan for a 25 percent safety margin and a clear overflow route so extreme storms do not cause catastrophic failure.
